Mod 4, IQ1: What effect can one species have on the other species in a community? Flashcards
Module 4: Ecosystem Dynamics
Abiotic Factors
The non-living factors of an ecosystem.
Air/water quality, soil/water pH, temperature, salinity
Biotic factors
The living factors of an ecosystem - the interactions between different living things
Predation, competition, disease, symbiotic relationships
Ecological niches
The set of abiotic and biotic environmental conditions in which a species can live.
Competition
The presence of one organism can limit the distribution (range/where) and abundance (number) of another species.
Intraspecific competition
Interactions and competition between individuals of the SAME species.
Interspecific Competition
Interactions and competition between individuals of DIFFERENT species.
Predation
An interaction in which one species (the predator) kills and eats the other (the prey).
Disease
Any process that adversely affects the normal functioning of tissues in a living organism.
Symbiotic relationships
