MOD 3 Sexual and Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Reproduction
The production of offspring by a sexual or asexual process
Asexual reproduction
A singular organism crates the offspring, which means it is a clone of the parent organism
E.g yeast
Sexual Reproduction
When two organisms contribute to creating a hybrid of both parents
E.g penguins
Chromosome
Rod-like structures where genes are located
Alleles
Different versions of genes that code for the same trait
Phenotype
The physical expression of that trait
Genotype
Are the alleles that are carried on an organism’s chromosomes
Evolution
The process by which populations change over time
Meiosis
A type of cell division that results in four daughter cells with half as many chromosomes as the parent cell
Gametes
Matured daughter cells
Germ cell
A cell that will undergo meiosis to become gametes
DNA
Genetic material which codes for the traits in offspring (CHECK)
Sister chromatids
Two identical strands of DNA formed when DNA replicated during interphase
Homologous chromosomes
Chromosomes of similar size with a matching set of genes
(one chromosome is from the mum and one from the dad)
Diploid
The original parent cell which contains a complete set of homologous chromosome pairs
