Lorazepam; Diazepam
MOA: GABA agonist- inhibitory neuro transmitter
Indications: seizure disorder, insomnia, anxiety, sedation
SE/AE: muscle weakness, hypotension, sedation, respiratory depression
BB: addiction/dependency; do not mix with other CNS depressants

Hydantoins: Examples; MOA; Indication; SE/AE; BB warning

Phenytoin, Fosphenytoin; prolong sodium channel inactivation
Indication: Seizure disorder
SE/AE: dysrhythmias and hypotension
BB: give slow via IV to avoid adverse effects; toxic to local tissue in the event of extravasation
Education: can decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives; teratogenic

Phenobarbital
MOA: GABA agonist
Indications; seizure disorder, sedation
SE/AE: respiratory depression; sedation
Less sedating than other barbiturates; can reduce vitamin k and cause bleeding
Education: do not take with alcohol; may reduce contraceptive effectiveness

Valproic Acid
MOA: prolong sodium channel inactivation, also a GABA agonist
Indication: Seizure Disorder, Migraine, Bipolar Disorder
BB: Hepatoxicity; highly teratogenic- not preferred for child bearing age women; pancreatitis
