Mod 2: Evolution/Domestication Flashcards
an idea developed to explain some occurrence. A theory is assumed to be true but hasn’t been proven.
Theory
believed to occur when two different species evolve in a similar way because of similar pressures in the environment
Convergence
believed to occur when two species influence one another
Coevolution
the ability of humans to care for and about the welfare of others, possible factor influencing the development of a close relationship between people and dogs
altruism
a process by which an organism is adapted for living with humans.
Domestication
What are 3 interdependent influences are involved in the process of domestication?
Selection for tameness, socialization, training
a popular theory of domestication suggests that early dog keepers may have unconsciously selected dogs with a high degree of tameness (animals showing minimal fear and aggressiveness towards humans), also associated with playfulness, dependency, and care-seeking tendencies
Selection for tameness
when domestication has resulted in extending juvenile characteristics into adulthood
Neotenization
What has neotenization in dogs has resulted in?
Increased openness for social contact with humans, increased dependency on humans, increased tendency for dogs to play into adulthood, increased tendency to exhibit a high degree of behavioral flexibility
aggressive and/or defensive social interaction between members of the same species.
agonistic
act of preying
predation
involves directive instruction and repetition.
