Mod 2: Communication Process Flashcards
communication between animals of the same species
intraspecific communication
What are the reasons animals exchange signals, or messages?
Regulating social activity, establishing their territories, facilitating mating behavior
refers to the raising of hairs on the neck and back of an animal.
Piloerection
the hairs on the neck and back of an animal
Hackles
signals that reveal the purpose (intent) of the sender.
Intention movements
What 3 factors are the sender’s message and the receiver’s reply are influenced by?
Their motivational states (drives, various things going on in their bodies), available resources (food and water), past social experience
a scientist who studies whole patterns of animal behavior in natural environments
Ethologist
an animal that lives by killing and consuming other animals
Predator
an animal taken by another animal (the predator) as food
Prey
signals relating to the sense of touch, result from direct contact with the body, such sensations are of tremendous importance for promoting bonding and socialization
Tactile signals
signals related to the sense of sight, appropriate for communicating intentions between animals at a close but relatively safe distance, require the direct attention of both sender and receiver
Visual signals
signals related to the sense of hearing, generally complement and reinforce visual signals
Auditory signals
signal related to the sense of smell, when deposited in the environment, they leave a lasting signal. All of the other types of signals (tactile, visual, and auditory) are relatively temporary
Olfactory signals
What three elements must be present for communication to occur?
A communicator/sender, recipient/receiver, message/signal
Communication between animals of different species
interspecific communication
