Mod. 12, Chi-Square/ Flashcards
reason for Using Chi-Square Tests
uare
Statistical test used when data are CATEGORICAL
Discrete, no in between values or averages possible
Used to test whether frequency distribution fits an expected distribution that is predicted by theory when observations are sorted on one dimension
Goodness of Fit Chi Square Tests/assumptions
ONE VARIABLE
Observed frequencies were obtained by random sampling
Expected frequency: MUST BE MORE THAN 5, NEED TO COLLECT ENOUGH PEOPLE FOR THE EXPECTED FREQUENCY
Tests of Independence
Used to test the independence of two variables; TWO VARIABLES
By determining whether the occurrence of one variable affects the probability of the occurrence of the other variable
Adding another variable
Chi Square Distribution Properties
Family of probability distributions
Shape depends on df
X axis: represents the values of the chi square
Y axis: presents the probability of these values
SMALLER DF: SEVERE RIGHT SKEWED
DF INCREASES: APPROACHES NORMAL
DF is directly related to the number of categories of the variable/variables
Contingency Table:
shows the observed frequencies for two variables
Conditions for Chi square test of independence
CONDITIONS: frequencies must be obtained randomly, each frequency must be greater than or equal tp 5
GOODNESS OF FIT TEST: ONE VARIABLE
SQUARE TEST OF INDEPENDENCE: TWO VARIABLES
