Mocks Revision Flashcards
Alloys
mixture of pure metal + element.
improves working properties.
( distort layers = hard )
Composite Materials
contains 2 or more different materials that are combined to create a material with: improved properties and functionality.
Mass Production
larger quantities. e.g. pharmaceuticals. automation
machines are set up to work long periods
Batch Production
used to make consistent products to maintain a quality standard (e.g. newspapers, baked goods, clothing)
large batches, reduces overall cost
each batch tested for quality (can use jigs/patterns to ensure quality)
Ergonomics
how humans interact with products. design for efficiency/ comfort in use and in the working environment.
Pollution (LCA)
By conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) a company will find out how much pollution is being created and plan a reduction strategy.
Primary Research
research collected that is firsthand. e.g. interviews, questionnaires and surveys
advantages - data is up to date, questions can be specific
disadvantages - time consuming, large number of people needed
Secondary research
access to information created by others. e.g. government data, company reports.
advantages - data is already available, huge amounts of research is available
disadvantages - data may not be up to date and specific to a company’s needs
How are metals alloyed?
by adding another element to the pure metal
Woods - finishes
Paint - adds a layer of protection
Oil - sinks into the timber as it penetrates the wood it provides protection and water resistance
Varnish - protects from moisture
Wax - protects from moisture
Wood preservation - protects wood from fungal / insect attack
Woods - stock form
rough sawn
planned all around (PAR)
Woods - origins
Trees!
Polymers - stock form
granules/pellets, rods/tubes, foam, film, sheet
Polymers - origins
Crude oil
Paper and board - finishes
