mock jan 24 Flashcards
What are synthetic fibres
Man-made, from coal, oil, minerals e.t.c
Negatives of synthetic fibres
They’re not biodegradable or sustainable
Positives of synthetic fibres
can be engineered to give them a range of properties
e.g. flame resistance, stain resistance
What is the difference between mixed and blended fibres?
Mixed fibres happen after the yarn is spun
Blended fibres are blows together before the yarn is spun
what are standard components
screw, hinge, bracket, nails, stay
How can you prevent corroding of metals
galvanising or painting
What is a stay?
they’re fastened on doors to control how much they open
What is a catch
it is used to keep kids closed on boxed or doors shut on cabinets
what is ergonomics
the relationship and interaction between people and objects
what is anthropometrics
people measurements
e.g. heights or finger lengths
How is metal made?
by extracting metal ores from rocks in the earths crust by mining, the metal is then processed and refined
What are ferrous metals w/ examples
metals that contain iron
e.g. steel
what are non-ferrous metals
metals that don’t contain iron
e.g. aluminium, copper, tin
What is cutlery made of
what are ladders made of
stainless steel
aluminium
give some examples of alloys pls
brass, bronze
What does a motor do
produces rotary motion when it receives power
they spin at a high speed
what does a gearbox do when attached to a motor
slows down the rotations to a more useful and controllable speed
what are four types of motion?
- rotary
- linear
- oscillating
- reciprocating motion
what is oscillating motion?
rotation moves back and forwards in a circular path
e.g. toothbrush
it’s measured in oscillations per second
What is reciprocating motion?
Back and forth motion in a straight like
e.g. a jigsaw
measured asw in oscillations per second
Three ways energy can be stored
kinetic
thermal
chemical
What are some non-renewable sources of electricity
nuclear
gas/coal/oil
what are some renewable sources
hydro electric
wind
solar
tidal
wave
geothermal
biomass
What is paper measured in?
gsm, grams per square meter
what is layout paper
for sketching and developing design ideas
bright white, smooth and lightweight
inexpensive
what is copier paper
used for printing and photocopying
smooth, medium weight, accessible
what is cartridge paper
for drawing and painting
textured surface w/ creamy colour
what is bleedproof paper
for drawing with marker pens
marker won’t bleed
what is sugar paper
for mounting and display work
inexpensive, rough surface
