Q

What are bench shears?

A

Similar to metal shears but larger and mounted on to a bench.
Larger and thicker blades for cutting straight lines in thicker sheet metal 6mm

Q

what are throatless shears?

A

Shears that have no throat, so the metal can be moved around freely, producing curved or straight cuts

Q

What’s a nibbler

A

removes a think section of metal in the middle that goes to waste
distorts the metal less

Q

What are hacksaws

A

They have a C shape adjustable frame that holds blades of different sizes
used for very thin metals

Q

what is metal pressing?

A

Stamping, pressing sheet metal into a 3D shape between two DIES
used for embossing, bending e.g. car body panels

Q

How does metal folding work

A

Small objects you can bend it over a bench vice and hammer it into place

Larger objects require a folder, metal is placed on the bed of the machine and held or clamped in place along the crease line. The bed is then hinged at the crease line forcing the metal to form a neat bend.

Q

What is brazing?

A

A form of soldering at very high temperatures,
joins metals together such as bronze, steel, aluminium, iron and copper that all have different melting points

9
Q

positives of Brazing

A

Brazed joints are airtight and water tight and can be plated over to form a seamless appearance

What is a template used for

A

to mark out awkward or irregular shapes repeatedly
you can use any thin, fairly rigid material

Q

How should designers try and minimise waste?

A

The scrapping and recycling of the waste produced can recover some material costs
It is far cheaper to recycle an existing metal than to mine, extract and process a new one.
