Mobility Transfers
Movement of body from one surface to an adjacent surface
- Completed independently or with assistance
- With or without an assistive device and/or adaptive equipment
Basic Principles of Mobility Transfers
-Assess client’s ability to assist safely
-Encourage client to assist
If doubtful seek further assistance
-Position surfaces i.e. w/c close to bed
-Adjust height of surfaces i.e. bed to w/c ht
-brace/lock surfaces ie w/c and bed
Basic Principles of Mobility Transfers
- Shoes, Brace
- Apply transfer or gait belt
- Explain transfer procedure
- Client scoots to edge with feet flat
- Estabilish a good hold on gait belt /client
- keep client close to you
Basic Principles of Mobility Transfers
- Don’t obscure client’s vision
- Prepare and direct client to move
- Have client reach for chair or bed
- Pivot client
- Lower into chair / bed while bending knees and maintaining a straight back
Mobility Transfers type: Stand pivot
- scoot forward on ‘3’
2. Push up to Stand 1/2, Turn and sit
Mobility Transfer type: Scoot
- Same set up
- Remove arm rest
- Squat up
- Turn
- Sit
Mobility Transfer type:
Slide board
Lift
Mobility: Principles of Lifting
- Determine pathway clearance and distance
- Feet apart
- Bend hips and knees
- keep normal spinal curve
- Use both hands and keep load close to body
- Brace abdominal muscles
- Come to stand using leg muscles
- Lift smoothly; avoid jerky movements
- if it is too heavy, lower load and use an assistive device
- when two or more lift, one should lead
Types Mobility Transfer
- Transfer aid/ lift
- Community lift
Mobility Repositioning
- Scoot back
- Position close
- Client leans forward
- Hands under buttocks
- On 3
- Stand 1/2
- Push on knees
