Mobility Flashcards
Ability to change & control position =
Mobility
Mobility requires sufficient-
Muscle strength, skeletal stability, energy, joint function, and neuromuscular synchronization
Ability of a person to move around in their environment =
Functional Ability
How many areas of functional ability?
3
What are the 3 areas of functional mobility?
Bed Mobility
Transferring
Ambulation
Bed Mobility =
Ability to move around in bed
Transferring =
Act of moving from one place to another
Ambulation =
Walk
What can cause degradation of all body systems?
Immobility
People who spend time in bed lose up to what percentage of their strength each week?
20%
Benefits of mobility?
Less depression, anxiety, delirium, pain, urinary discomfort, DVT, pneumonia
What are the 2 categories of mobility?
Mobility out of bed
Mobility in bed
PT can help 25% =
Maximum Assistance
PT can help 50% =
Moderate
PT can help 75% =
Minimal Assistance
Contact / Gaurd =
1 or 2 hands on PT
NWB =
Non-Weight Bearing. Can put no weight on extremity. Uses crutches or other device
TTWB =
Toe-Touch Weight Bearing. Toes can touch floor, but no weight can be put on foot
Partial Weight Bearing =
Small amount of weight can be put on affected leg, with standing only, no walking
BMAT =
Banner Mobility Assessment Tool.
Helps nurses assess PT functional ability
Sit to stand mechanical lifts =
Lifts
What’s the purpose of early mobility protocols?
Maintain the PT’s baseline mobility + functional capacity, decrease delirium, and decrease length of stay
Lateral =
On side
Supine =
Flat on back
Prone =
On stomach
Fowler’s Position =
Head of bed is up 45-90 degrees
High Fowler’s Position =
90 degree angle
Semi-Fowler’s Position =
35 - 40 degree angle
Trendelenberg Position =
Head of bead lower than feet
Tripod Position =
Sitting position with hands on knees
If a PT begins to fall, what do you do?
Ease them to the floor. DO NOT try to break their fall, could result in a more serious injury
Always keep the head of bed how high up for bed bound PTs?
30-45 degrees (Semi-Fowler’s)
