  • Palpate: on the shoulder, at the curve of the neck
  • Resistance: place hands over each acromion and push down

  • Lower Trapezius
  • Palpate: find inferior angle, palpate medial and inferior (between vertebral border and spine)
  • Resistance: cup the inferior angle of scapula and push up
  • Note: use alternate grading system because no against gravity position

  • Palpate: lateral ribs, just lateral to to inferior angle of scapula
  • Resistance: axial border of scapula push towards back

  1. Biceps brachii
    - Starting position: forearm/hand in supination
    - Palpate: anterior surface of humerus
    - Resistance: distal end of forearm, pull out into extension
  2. Brachialis
    - Starting position: forearm/hand in pronation
    - Palpate: forearm pronated, medial to the distal biceps tendon
    - Resistance: distal end of forearm, pull out into extension
  3. Brachioradialis
    - Starting position: forearm/hand in midposition like holding a beer
    - Palpate: radial side of the proximal forearm
    - Resistance: distal end of forearm, pull out into extension

  • Palpate: medial to the distal biceps tendon on the anterior side of the proximal forearm
  • Resistance: weird handshake thing where you hold their forearm

A
  1. Extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL)
    - Palpate: tendon, dorsal surface of wrist, base of the 2nd metacarpal
    - Resistance: back of the hand on radial side, push into flexion and ulnar deviation
  2. Extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB)
    - Palpate: tendon, dorsal surface of wrist, base of 3rd metacarpal
    - Resistance: back of the hand, push into flexion
  3. Extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU)
    - Palpate: tendon, dorsal surface of the wrist, between head of ulna and base of the 5th metacarpal

Wrist Flexion

A
  1. Flexor carpi radialis (FCR)
    - Palpate: anterior side of the wrist, in line with 2nd metacarpal
    - Resistance: metacarpals on the palm
  2. Palmaris Longus
    - Palpate: will stand out on anterior side of wrist if flexion is resisted or thumb/pinky opposition, may not be present
    - Resistance: metacarpals on the palm
  3. Flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU)
    - Palpate: anterior surface of the wrist, ulnar side
    - Resistance: head of the fifth metacarpal toward wrist extension and radial deviation

Finger Metacarpophalangeal Extension

A
  1. Extensor digitorum
    - Palpate: dorsal-ulnar surface of the proximal forearm, tendons are on dorsum of the hand
    - Resistance: use one finger, push head of proximal phalanx
  2. Extensor indicis (EI)
    - Palpate: mid to distal dorsal forearm between radius and ulna, tendon is ulnar to ED tendon
    - Resistance: use one finger, push head of proximal phalanx
  3. Extensor digiti minimi (EDM)
    - Palpate: tendon is ulnar to ED tendon
    - Resistance: use one finger, push head of proximal phalanx

  • Flexor digitorum profundus (FDP)
  • Palpate: just volar to the ulna, proximal 1/3 of forearm
  • Resistance: one finger on pad of their finger

    - Palpate: first is in webspace between first finger and thumb, dorsal side of hand
    - Resistance: pinch fingers together at proximal phalanx
  2. Abductor digiti minimi
    - Palpate: ulnar border of fifth metacarpal
    - Resistance: pinch fingers together at proximal phalanx

A
  • Volar palmar interossei (there are 3)

- Palpate: too deep, when atrophied the areas between metacarpals on palm appear sunken

Thumb Interphalangeal Extension

A
  • Extensor pollicis longus (EPL)
  • Palpate: ulnar border of snuffbox, dorsal surface of proximal phalanx
  • Resistance: push distal phalanx into flexion with one finger

  • Resistance: press the first metacarpal toward adduction
