Mixture
A combination of substances that can be separated by physical changes; examples are brass, air, or smoothies.
Solution
A mixture of a solid dissolved in water.
Solvent
The liquid part of a solution. Water is the Universal Solvent.
Solute
The solid part of a solution.
Miscible liquid
A liquid that will mix easily.
Immiscible liquid
A liquid that will not mix easily.
Emulsion
A mixture of an immiscible liquid that has been made miscible by an emulsifier.
Filtration
A method to separate solid particles from liquids, such as filtering saltwater.
Decantation
When you let solids sink, and let the clean liquid pour out.
Chromatography
A colorful method used to analyze substances in a mixture.
Chromatogram
The band of color formed by chromatography.
Distillation
A way to get solvents from solutions.
