Acids and Bases Unit Flashcards
Acid
Acids are compounds containing hydrogen. When dissolved in water, they form hydrogen ions.
Weak Acid
Weak acids are acids that don’t have many hydrogen ions.
Strong Acid
A strong acid is an acid that most of the molecules separate to form multiple hydrogen ions in a solution.
Base
Bases are compounds that contain hydroxide ions.
Weak Base
Weak bases dissociate or dissolve few of their hydroxide ions.
Strong Base
Strong bases dissociate or dissolve most or all of their hydroxide ions.
pH
A way to figure out if something is an acid or base. pH stands for power of Hydrogen.
pH below seven
a pH below seven is an acid.
pH above seven
a pH above seven is a base.
pH equal to seven
a pH equal to seven is neutral.
Indicator
An indicator is a substance that changes color to show if something is acidic or basic.
Universal Indicator
A Universal Indicator is a mixture of dyes that change according to their pH.
