Mixtures: Terms and definitions Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A MIXTURE is a combination of two pure substances or pure chemicals that have been stirred together.
For something to be called a mixture, you must be able to seperate it again.
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture where both the solute and the solvent have dissolved into each other, making the substance completely clear.
What is an suspension?
An suspension is created when a mixture is made where the solute and the solvent do NOT dissolve.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the substance something dissolves into.
For example, if you dissolved sugar and water, the WATER is the solvent.
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that dissolves into something.
For example, if you dissolved sugar into water, the SUGAR is the solute.
What is a dilute solution?
A dilute solution is when there is only a little solute (something that dissolves into something else) in a solution.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution is concentrated if there a lot of solute ( something that dissolves into something else) dissolved into a solvent (the thing that it dissolves into).
What is a saturated solution?
When a substance will no longer dissolve substances, it is said to be saturated.
For example, if you filled a glass with water and kept adding salt, you would find that after a while to solution would stop dissolving and fall to the bottom of the glass to form a sediment.
What is a sediment?
Sediment is solute that does not dissolve and forms a sludge at the bottom of a mixture.
What is an insoluble?
An insoluble is when the particular solvent can’t dissolve the solute. For example, oil is insoluble in water.
