Growth and Development Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
Mitosis is a type of cell division that involves a eukaryotic cell being divided into two identical daughter cells.
What is a daughter cell?
A cell formed by a division of another.
What is development?
The changes in an organisms body form or shape in the course of an organisms life.
What is growth?
When an organism gets larger, increasing in mass, length or volume.
What is reproduction?
Reproduction is the process of organisms producing new individuals.
What is sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction happens when a sperm (from a male) and an
egg (from a female) join together in a process called Fertilisation.
Two individuals are needed.
What is asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction involves NO fertilisation between male
and female gametes.
Offspring are genetically identical to their “parents”
Asexual reproduction requires only one parent. It involves the
process of mitosis or fission.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Prokaryotes are organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other organelles.
What cell division do prokaryotic cells use?
Binary fission.
What is miosis?
Miosis is a type of cell division producing gametes with half chromosomes.
