Mixtures, Chemical Reactions, Phase Changes and Measurements Flashcards
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of matter
What are physical properties and chemical properties?
physical properties don’t require a chemical reaction, while chemical reactions are observed in a chemical reaction.
What are the physical states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas
Give 3 characteristics of solids
they have a fixed shape, there is a high level of interaction between the molecules and atoms and the molecules are very close together
Give 3 characteristics of liquids
the molecules are father apart than solids but less than the gases, they take the shape of the container and the volume can’t b changed.
Give 3 characteristics of gases
the molecules are spaced very far apart, there is no fixed shape and the volume can’t be changed
List the changes in matter and what they mean
Melting, freezing, boiling, condensation, sublimation and deposition
What are the chemical composition of substances broken into?
pure substances and mixtures
What are pure substances?
Made up of only one type of atom in general eg. aluminum foik
What are mixtures?
substances made up of two or more atoms/molecules that form a substance but aren’t chemically bonded
What are the categories of mixtures?
homogeneous and heterogeneous
What do you use to separate a mixture of a solid and a liquid?
filtration
What do you use to separate a mixture of liquids?
distillation
What is the standard unit of measurement for distance and mass?
Distance - meter
Mass - kg
What is the difference between accuracy and precision?
accuracy is how close the values measured are to the actual value while precision is how close the values are to each other.
