Mixtures And Solutions Vocabulary Flashcards
Solution
a mixture in which all parts are evenly mixed; special type of mixture when one substance dissolves into another substance
Example: lemon juice stirred into water
Example: Salt stirred into water
Dissolve
mix one substance evenly into another
Evenly dispersed
uniformly spread throughout when dissolved
Soluble
can be broken down evenly in water
Combine
mix together
Substance
a certain kind of matter
Mixture
a combination of two or more substances that can be separated
Separate
split apart a mixture into individual substances
Examples of solutions
saltwater
lemon juice, sugar, water
orange powdered paint and water
grape drink mix, sugar, water
Changing physical properties
when a substance is added to water to form a solution, some physical properties of substance and water can change
Example: salt added to warm water - dissolves. Salt size and color change
Conservation of matter
The total mass of ingredients is equal to mass of the solution the ingredients form.
Example 4 gram cube sugar added to 200 water grams = 204 grams
Methods of separating mixtures (five)
evaporating or boiling
strainer or sieve
paper filter
tweezers
magnets
Maintaining physical properties
Objects in mixture maintain their physical properties
Example: mix iron and sand, - properties of the two stay the same
Separation examples (four)
Use magnet to separate iron and sand
Paper filter used to separate sand and water
Saltwater mixture - boil until water evaporates and salt will be left
Strainer - used to separate sand/rock mixture
