Mixtures And Separation Flashcards
What is a mixture
A combination of two or more chemicals which can be separated from each other
What is the definition of dissolve
When something mixes so completely with liquid that you can no longer see it
What is soluble
Describes solids which can dissolve
What is insoluble
Describes solids which can’t dissolve
What is a solution
A liquid that contains a solid dissolved in it
What is a solute
The solid in a solution
What is the solvent
The liquid part of a solution
What is filtration
Separating a solid from a liquid using filter paper only works with solids which won’t dissolve
What is evaporation
Separating a solid from a liquid by allowing all of the liquid to turn to vapour leaving the solid behind
What is distillation
Separating two liquids with different boiling points by heating evaporating then condensing the liquid
How do you find out the mass of a solution
Mass of Solvent + Mass of Solute = Mass of Solution
What is chromatography
The process in which mixtures of dissolved materials can be separated because of their particle sizes and solubility in a solvent
How is a red blood cell adapted to do its job
Has no nucleus so there is more space for oxygen
