Q

Explain the conservation of energy

A

Energy cannot be created or destroyed,e.g. a light bulb transfers electrical energy into light energy. Often when energy transfers take place there are some unwanted transfers. E.g. in a light bulb some energy is transferred into heat. The less waste energy there is the more efficient the transfer

Q

What are fossil fuels

A

Much of our energy comes from the burning of fossil fuels: coal oil and gas. Thesefuels are good because they can provide a constant supply of large amounts of cheap energy. However, they are running out, they caused lots of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere which leads to climate change and they release pollutants such as nitrogen doxides which are bad for health

Q

What is solar energy

A

Using the energy from the sun to generate electricity

17
Q

What is nuclear energy

A

It is less polluting than fossil fuels and it produces huge amounts of energy. However, any waste from a nuclear power plant can be very dangerous and difficult to get rid of

18
Q

What is efficiency and what is its equation

A

Efficiency is a measure of how much energy is transferred into a useful energy.
Efficiency = useful energy output ÷ total energy input

19
Q

What is the equation for power

A

Power = Energy ÷ Time
