Energy Resources Flashcards
Explain the conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed,e.g. a light bulb transfers electrical energy into light energy. Often when energy transfers take place there are some unwanted transfers. E.g. in a light bulb some energy is transferred into heat. The less waste energy there is the more efficient the transfer
What are fossil fuels
Much of our energy comes from the burning of fossil fuels: coal oil and gas. Thesefuels are good because they can provide a constant supply of large amounts of cheap energy. However, they are running out, they caused lots of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere which leads to climate change and they release pollutants such as nitrogen doxides which are bad for health
What are all the types of energy
Movement, heat, lights, chemical, sound, electrical, nuclear, elastic potential, gravitational potential
What are joules
The unit energy is measured in
What is power
The amount of energy transferred each second
What is a watt
The unit power is measured in
What is a fuel
Is substance which can be burnt to release energy
How are fossil fuels made
Formed millions of years ago from decaying organisms
What is a renewable energy source
Sources of energy that do not get used up when used e.g. wind energy
What is a non-renewable energy source
Sources of energy that get used up when used e.g. coal
What is wind energy
The source of the renewable energy that comes from using turbines
What is wave energy
A source of renewable energy that uses the movement of the sea
What is biomass
The fuel that comes from living things e.g. wood or poop
What is hydroelectricity
A source of renewable energy that come from using dams or river water to turn turbines
What is geothermal energy
Using the heat from underground to generate steam to drive electrical turbines
