Mixtures and Separating - IIS Flashcards
Is chalk soluble?
No
Is salt soluble?
Yes
Do chalk and water make a mixture or a solution?
Mixture
Do salt and water make a mixture or a solution?
Solution
Do you know what the diagram for filtration looks like?
You better
Why could you separate the chalk from the water but not the salt?
Because the chalk didn’t dissolve but the salt had.
What is the conclusion of the filtration experiment?
A substance can only be separated from water by filtration if it is soluble.
What does the term mixture chemically mean?
It can easily be separated and substances in the mixture are not chemically bonded.
Do you know what the diagram for evaporation looks like?
You better
What happens when you evaporate a salt solution?
The water evaporates and leaves the salt behind.
What is the conclusion of the evaporation experiment?
A substance which has dissolved in water can be separated from the water by evaporation.
What was the aim of the sand and salt experiment?
To separate the sand from the salt
How did you separate the sand from the salt?
The salt and sand mixture was stirred into the water. Salt dissolved because it was soluble but sand was left behind because it is insoluble. Then, we filtered it using filter paper. Sand was left and the salt solution went into the beaker. The salt was then separated from the water using evaporation.
Why are the different methods of separation used?
Evaporation is used to separate soluble
matter from water. Filtration is used to separate insoluble matter from water.
What is the calculation to find the concentration of salt in seawater in g/l?
Mass of evaporating basin WITH salt crystals (g) subtracted by the mass of the evaporating basin WITHOUT salt crystals (g) = The concentration in salt in seawater (g/l)
How was the salt separated from the water after it had been separated from the water?
The salt was separated from the water using evaporation (The heat evaporated the water, leaving salt crystals behind).
What is the mass of salt in 1 litre of seawater (experimental)?
34g
What is the mass of salt in 20cm3 of seawater?
0.68g
If the mass of the empty basin is 53.63, and the mass of the salt+basin is 54.31 how much salt is there?
54.31-53.63=0.68g
What is the mass of salt in 1 litre of seawater (actual)?
