How do you test for conductivity of an element? (Remember to revise diagram).

A

You connect the element to a battery pack using crocodile clips and wires. Connect one wire between the battery pack and the element, one between the element and a light bulb and one between the light bulb to the end of the battery pack. If it lights up, the element is a conductor. If not then it isn’t.

What is electrolysis?

A

Electrolysis is a technique which uses electricity to split a compound into the elements it is made up of.

What happened and what did you do during the Electrolysis experiment?

A

We placed 2 electrodes, which were connected to a battery pack with wires, inside the light blue copper chloride liquid. After a minute or so, the water around one electrode began to bubble and you could smell the chlorine, showing that chlorine gas had formed. Around the other electrode, a thin layer of copper had begun to form and was covering the part of the electrode which was in the water. This showed that the copper and the chlorine had separated and were now 2 separate elements instead of the compound, Copper Chloride.
