Mixtures And Chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
Are mixtures easily separated?
A
Yes - unlike compounds
2
Q
True or false
Air is a mixture of gases
A
True
3
Q
What are the properties of a mixture?
A
They are just a mixture of the properties of the separate parts.
4
Q
What is the experiment for chromatography?
A
- Draw a line near the bottom of the sheet of filter paper?
- Add a spot of ink on the line and place the sheet in a beaker of solvent - water?
- The solvent used depends on whats being tested
- Make sure the ink isn’t touching the solvent
- Place a lid on it
- The solvent seeks up
- Each different die in the ink will move up the paper in a different rate so the dyes will separate out.
- If any of the dyes are insoluble they will stay on the baseline.
- When the solvent has reached the top of the paper, take the paper out and leave it to dry.
The end result pattern of spots will be called a chromatogram.
5
Q
What’s an example of a solvent?
A
Water
6
Q
Why do you use a pencil to do the mark?
A
Because they are insoluble
7
Q
What is insoluble and soluble?
A
Insoluble wont dissolve
