Elements Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a substance made up of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their nucleus.
True or false?
Atoms can have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons
True
Elements consist of atoms with (the same / a different ) atomic number
The same
Is it the protons or the electrons that decide what type of atom it is?
Protons
What is the name of an atom with only one proton in its nucleus?
Hydrogen
What is the name of an atom with two protons in the nucleus?
Helium
What are isotopes?
Different forms of the same element which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Isotopes have (the same /different ) atomic numbers but (the same / different ) mass numbers.
Isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
How do you find the number of neutrons?
Mass number - the atomic number = number of neutrons
How can you work out the relative atomic mass?
Relative atomic mass = sum of (isotope abundance x isotope mass number ) - sum of abundances of all the isotopes.
