Mixtures Flashcards
Matter is classified into Pure substances and Mixtures. What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogenous and heterogenus mixtures.
What is distillation?
The process of separating liquids with different boiling points.
What is filtration?
The process of separating a solid that can dissolve from one that can’t.
What is chromatography?
The process of separating liquids of different colours.
What is evaporation?
The process of separating a liquid and a solid by boiling off the liquid.
What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture that contains a solute and a solvent.
What is a solute?
Anything that can be dissolved in a solution.
What is a solvent?
Anything that dissolves a solute in a solution.
What is density?
The amount of mass per unit of volume.
How do you calculate density?
ρ = M/V M = mass (g) V = volume (ml or cm cubed) ρ = density (rho)
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture with two or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined ( they can be separated ). They are a special type of mixture where tiny particles of one substance are scattered through another substance.
What is a suspension?
A suspension is a heterogenous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase sometime after their introduction. We apply the word ‘suspension’ when particles are big enough to eventually settle. If the particles are too small to ever settle, they are said to form a colloid.
Which list shows mixtures in which the particles dispersed in water are increasing in size?
A: colloid, solution, suspension
B: solution, suspension, colloid
C: solution, colloid, suspension
C - Solutions contain particles small enough to dissolve. Particles in colloids are dispersed, but the mixture is cloudy due to the particles reflecting light. Particles in suspensions are large enough to settle out if the mixture is left to stand.
