Ecology Flashcards
The sum of all ecosystems on earth is called the…
Biosphere.
What are biomes?
A biome is a large region of Earth that has a certain climate and certain types of living things. The plants and animals of each biome have traits that help them to survive in their particular biome. Each biome has many ecosystems.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is made up of all of the living and nonliving things in an area, such as all the plants, animals, and physical landforms of the area.
Why study ecology?
- Helps us understand how the world works
- Helps us know how to take care of the environment
- See the effects of human interference with the environment
What is the difference between abiotic and biotic features in an ecosystem?
Biotic factors are anything that is living in an ecosystem, whereas abiotic factors are the non-living factors in an ecosystem.
What is this?
A food chain. A food chain shows how each living thing gets food, and how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature.
What is this?
Food webs show how plants and animals are connected in many ways, and is a natural interconnection of food chains in an ecosystem.
What animals eat the grasshoppers in this food web?
Owls and birds.
Who are the producers in the food web?
Grass, grains, and carrots.
What is a trophic level?
The trophic level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food chain.
What are the 5 levels in an energy pyramid?
Producers, consumer 1, consumer 2, consumer 3, consumer 4.
What is the difference between consumers and producers?
Producers make their own food, and consumers eat either producers or lower level consumers.
