mixtures Flashcards
What is a solution?
Solution is a mixture formed when a solid dissolves in a liquid.
example: sugar and water
What is a solvent?
Solvent is a liquid in which other substances will dissolve
example: water and alcohol
What is a solute?
Solute is the substance that dissolves in the solvent.
example:sugar and salt
what happens to the sugar particle when the cube dissolves?
the sugar crystal is visible. as the water particles vibrate and slide past one another they bump into the vibrating sugar particle, the movement helps to separate the sugar particles and they get mixed up with the water particles.
what is a concentrated solution?
a solution in which a great mass of solute is dissolved.
what is A dilute solution
a solution in which a small mass of solute is dissolved.
what is soluble?
a solid that will dissolve in a solvent such as sodium chloride and sugar.
what is insoluble?
a solid that will not dissolve in a solvent such as iron.
what is saturated?
a solution in which no more of the solid will dissolve.
what is solubility?
how soluble a substance is.
what is variable?
factors that can be changed in an investigation.
what is independent variable?
the variable that you change
what is dependent variable?
the variable that you measure
what is control variable?
the variable that you keep the same
what is range?
the highest minus the lowest.
what is interval?
the difference between two things.
what is chromatography
a technique to separate out colored inks. chromatogram is the resulting the image on the paper.
what is solvent front?
used in chromatography and is the level the solvent has reached as it travel up the paper.
all solutions are transparent but don’t mean colorless.
The difference between dissolving and melting is?
dissolving needs two substances but melting only needs one substance.
For example: ice cream melting, sugar in black tea.
equation for solution:
mass of solution=mass of solute + mass of solvent
the mass has been conserved means the mass has stayed the same.
for example: the mass of the salt (solute) is 9 grams, the mass of the water (solvent) is 50 grams, what is the mass of the solution?
the mass of solution is 9 + 50=59
The process of separating dissolved liquids using proper chromatography:
A pencil line is drawn, and spots of ink or plant dye are placed on it. There is a container of solvent, such as water or ethanol.
The paper is lowered into the solvent. …
As the solvent continues to travel up the paper, the different coloured substances spread apart.
