3
Q

define; postpositivistic

A

an objective measurable truth exists (positivistic), but is known by humans subjectively (post), quantitative, positivism came first in the 19thC, and the post came afterwards

Q

define; pragmatic

A

the subjective and the objective are both of interest, but the primary interest is finding the best way to get the result you want out of your research, mixed methods

6
Q

define; phenomenological

A

everything is a phenomenon that we interpret, reality is a social construct which we see through a subjective lens, what’s most important is the subjective, qualitative

Q

define/explain; monomethod approach to mixed methods

A

one methodology is used, either qualitative or quantitative, multiple methods within the chosen methodology may be used

9
Q

define/explain; mixed model approach to mixed methods

A

melding quantitative and qualitative pieces at different phases of research, ex. a survey with both closed ended and open ended questions, ex. qualitative data and quantifying it, giving counts in reporting of qualitative interviews or observations

Q

define; embedded mixed methods research design

A

simultaneous, one methodology is primary, the other is a supplement, unlike triangulation the research questions are different

Q

define/explain; triangulation mixed methods research design

A

simultaneous, using different methods and methodologies to give different information on views of a topic, ex. mixing interviews, case studies, surveys, news footage, military records, etc. order doesn’t matter
-widely used for good reason, loses some bias by using different types of sources

13
Q

define/explain; exploratory mixed methods research design

A

sequential, with qualitative first, then the quantitative, qualitative data used to explore ideas for the survey
-this lets you write questions for quantitative analysis and generate hypothesis, the survey part tests the hypothesis

Q

define/explain; explanatory mixed methods research design

A

sequential, with quantitative (survey), then qualitative to explain results, ex. interview then case study
