Das Schmitta-Jahr bildet einen Grundpfeiler der jüdischen Landwirtschaft. Die Einhaltung dieser Tradition ist tief im halachischen Gesetz und in der Thora verankert und prägte bereits den landwirtschaftlichen Zyklus in biblischen Zeiten.
Häufig wird das Schmitta-Jahr auch als Shabbatjahr bezeichnet. Es beschreibt den Grundsatz, die Felder 6 Jahre in Folge zu bearbeiten, um ihnen anschließend ein Jahr lang die Möglichkeit zur Regeneration zu geben, so wie wir Menschen es am 7. Tag der Woche, dem Shabbat tun.
Wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet Schmitta „freigeben“ oder „loslassen“ – landwirtschaftlich betrachtet geht es im Schmitta-Jahr vornehmlich um das Brach liegen lassen.
