What is it basically

A

When a valve prolapses back into the atria during systole.

IS NOT THE SAME AS MITRAL REGURGITATION

It MAY or may not occur with concurrent mitral regurgitation, which can be mild or severe.

Causes of mitral valve prolapse

A

Myxomatous degeneration of the valve.

MOST cases are idiopathic.

Other causes include connective tissue disorders, Marfans, Ehler Hanlos, Osteogenesis imperfecta.

Auscultation

A

May cause a mid-systolic click

If associated with MR, platuea murmur after the click, high pitched blowing murmur.

Symptoms of mitral valve prolapse

A

Usually asymptomatic, unless accompanied by symptomaitc MR.

May cause atypical chest pain or palpitations from supraventricular arrhythmias.

Normal ECG.

Treatment

A

Treat for MR as normal.

Otherwise,
Beta blockers for chest pain and palpitations

Antricoags for AFib.
