Mitosis Vocabulary Flashcards
Cell Cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division.
Mitosis
The process by which a parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
Interphase
The stage of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis in which the cell grows
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis during which chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear.
Metaphase
The second phase of mitosis during which chrorosomes line up along the center of the cell.
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis during which each chromosome is pulled apart by spinle fibers and the resulting daughter chroromomes are pulled to oppisit sides of the cell.
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chrorosomes on oppisite sides of the cell and the cell and the chrorosomes become unwound DNA a newly formed nucleus.
Cytokinesis
A stage of the cell cycle during which the cell membrane pinched in and the cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells after mitosis.
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells that forms the spinle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis.
Chrorosomes
The part of a cell that contains genes.
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information.
Centromere
A structure that holds the sister chromatids together.
Sister Chromatids
Two identical chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosomes.
Daughter cell
The results of the cell cycle where two genetically identical cells are formed.
