Mitosis/ Chromosomes Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
Your genetic material in the form of chromosomes.
What are chromosomes?
Coiled up lengths of DNA molecules.
What do genes control?
Different genes control different characteristics.
How many chromosomes do humans typically have?
23 pairs or 46 chromosomes.
What is cell division called?
Mitosis
What is mitosis used for?
Growth and repair.
What happens at the end of the cell cycle
There are two identical cells with the same number of chromosomes
What happens in the cell cycle?
The cell grows and increases the amount of subcellular structures such as mitochondria- it then duplicates its DNA so there is one copy for each new cell- the chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart- membranes form around the chromosomes to become nuclei, the nucleus has now divided- lastly the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide.
What pulls the chromosomes apart?
Spindle fibres
Cytokinesis
The cell splitting
