Mitosis & Binary fission Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
The series of steps that take place to replace dying or lost cells.
What is mitosis used for?
Growth, development (of new tissues), replacement (of cells that we lose each day).
What are the steps of the cell cycle?
The cell enlarges and produces more sub-cellular structures (e.g mitochondria and ribosomes)
DNA replicates and chromosomes duplicate to form two arms/copies
More cell growth
The DNA divides into two (mitosis)
The cell divides into two (cytokinesis)
Forming two daughter cells
How many pairs of chromosomes do most humans have?
23
What is binary fission?
Bacteria cell grows and replicates it DNA
The DNA move to opposite sides of the cell
A new cell wall forms down the middle
Bacteria splits
What is the mean division time?
The mean time it takes for a cell to divide
How to calculate bacterial growth:
Division time
=Amount of division rounds
