Cell biology Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Multicellular organisms with a nucleus (plant, animal etc.)
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Unicellular organisms that do not have a nucleus (bacteria etc.)
What are the features of an animal cell?
Nucleus (holds DNA)
Cytoplasm (a solvent in which chemical reactions take place)
Cell membrane (a selectively permeable structure which controls what goes in and out of the cell)
Mitochondria (place where aerobic respiration takes place and releases energy to the cell)
Ribosomes (the site of protein synthesis)
What are the features of a plant cell?
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
Mitochondria
Ribosomes
Cell wall (made of cellulose, supports cell structure)
Chloroplasts (contains chlorophyll, the site of photosynthesis and respiration)
Permanent vacuole (contains cell sap and stores nutrients)
What are the features of a bacteria cell?
Cytoplasm (a solvent in which chemical reactions take place)
Cell membrane (a selectively permeable structure which controls what goes in and out of the cell)
Mitochondria (place where aerobic respiration takes place and releases energy to the cell)
Ribosomes (the site of protein synthesis)
Flagella (small tail which propells bacteria)
Circular strand of DNA (holds DNA)
Plasmids (extra, smaller circular strands of DNA)
