Mitosis & Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Mitosis
The division of a parent cell’s nucleus. This is the first stage in cell division
Cell division
Process by which a cell divides into two completely identical daughter cells
Cytokinesis
This is the division of cytoplasm in a parent cell: second stage in division
Interphase
In-between cell division, a period of growth for the cells
Cell cycle
The series of stages that cells go through as they perform mitosis, growing and dividing
Prophase
The first and longest stage of mitosis. The chromosomes being produced are finally visible and double, centrioles move and make the spindle, and the nuclear envelope disappears
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase
Sister chromatids move away from each other
Telophase
Chromosomes lose shape, cell membrane pinches in, nuclear envelope re-forms
Chromosomes
Visible genetic material. Paired chromatids
Sister chromatids
2 identical connected strands of a chromosome
Chromatin
Thin, unorganized genetic material
Ex, like spaghetti
Cancer
Uncontrollable cell growth. Does not respond to normal growth regulation signals
Asexual reproduction
Process by which a single parent reproduces by itself
DNA replication
Process by which DNA copies itself
