Mitosis And Miosis Flashcards
What happens in S phase
The chromosomes of the cell are copied
What happens in G2
The cell grows in preparation for cell division
What happens in cytokinesis
A single cell is divided into two identical daughter cells whenever the cytoplasm is divided
What is mitosis
A process in which a eukaryotic cell separates it’s already duplicated chromosomes into two sets of chromosomes so there will be two identical nuclei
What happens in prophase
The DNA molecules are shortened and condensed to form visible chromosomes. Enzymes break down the nuclear membrane and nucleolus so they are no longer visible. Lastly spindle fibers form
What happens in metaphase
The spindle fibers attach themselves to the centromeres of the chromosomes and align the chromosomes at the equator
What happens in anaphase
The spindle fibers shorten and the centromere splits separating the two sister chromatids.
What happens in telophase
Chromatids are pulled to the opposite poles of the cell. The nuclear envelope and nucleolus reform before the chromosomes uncoil and then the spindle fibers disintegrate
What happens in prophase 1
The chromosomes pair up so the chromosomes in each pair are homologous. Then crossing over occurs. After that the nuclear membrane starts to break down and the spindle microtubules stretch out from each pole to the equator
What happens in metaphase 1
The paired up homologous chromosomes line up at the equator and the spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes
What happens in anaphase 1
The homologous chromosomes are separated and pulled to opposite poles. The cell membrane starts to prepare for its separation at the equator to form two cells
What happens in telophase 1
Each chromosome from the homologous pair are found at opposite poles and the nuclear membrane reforms around each daughter nucleus. The membrane then divides through cytokinesis
What happens in prophase 2
The spindle microtubules stretch out from each pole again and the nuclear membrane breaks down
What happens in metaphase two
The chromosomes in each cell line up at the equator and the spindle microtubules attach to the centromere of each chromosome
What happens in anaphase 2
The centromere devised as a result of the spindle microtubules pulling each sister chromatid to opposite poles in both cells. Each sister chromatid then becomes a chromosome
