Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
Compare mitosis and meiosis
A
MITOSIS:
- Cell division for somatic cells
- 2 identical diploid daughter cells produced
MEIOSIS:
- Cell division for germ line cells
- 4 non-identical haploid cells produced
- 1 round replication > 2 rounds division
- Diploid reduced to haploid
2
Q
Detail the stages of mitosis
A
PROPHASE:
- Spindle fibres appear
- Chromosomes condense
PROMETAPHASE:
- Spindle fibres attach to chromosomes
- Chromosomes condense
METAPHASE:
- Chromosomes align on cell equator
ANAPHASE:
- Centromeres divide
- Sister chromatids to opposite poles
TELOPHASE:
- Nuclear membrane reforms
- Chromosomes decondense
- Spindle fibres disappear
CYTOKINESIS:
- Cytoplasm divides
- Parent cell becomes 2 identical daughter cells
3
Q
What happens during meiosis I and meiosis II?
A
MEIOSIS I:
- Homologous pairs of chromosomes line up and separate
MEIOSIS II:
- Chromosomes line up and chromatids separate
