Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards

1
Q

Compare mitosis and meiosis

A

MITOSIS:

  • Cell division for somatic cells
  • 2 identical diploid daughter cells produced

MEIOSIS:

  • Cell division for germ line cells
  • 4 non-identical haploid cells produced
  • 1 round replication > 2 rounds division
  • Diploid reduced to haploid

Q

Detail the stages of mitosis

A

PROPHASE:

  • Spindle fibres appear
  • Chromosomes condense

PROMETAPHASE:

  • Spindle fibres attach to chromosomes
  • Chromosomes condense

METAPHASE:
- Chromosomes align on cell equator

ANAPHASE:

  • Centromeres divide
  • Sister chromatids to opposite poles

TELOPHASE:

  • Nuclear membrane reforms
  • Chromosomes decondense
  • Spindle fibres disappear

CYTOKINESIS:

  • Cytoplasm divides
  • Parent cell becomes 2 identical daughter cells

Q

What happens during meiosis I and meiosis II?

A

MEIOSIS I:
- Homologous pairs of chromosomes line up and separate

MEIOSIS II:
- Chromosomes line up and chromatids separate
