Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
-Division of the Nucleus
What is the purpose of Cell Division?
- Growth
- Repair
- Asexual Reproduction
What is Cytokinesis?
-Division of the Cytoplasm
What happens during Interphase?
- Non-dividing stage
- “Resting stage”
- Gap 1 (G1), Gap 2 (G2), Synthesis (S) phase
What happens during Prophase Stage?
- Nuclear membrane and nuclelolus disappears
- Spindle fibers are formed
- Chromatins condense to thick chromosomes
What happens during Metaphase?
-Chromatids line up at the equatorial plate
What happens during Anaphase?
-Chromatids move to opposite poles
What happens during Telophase?
- Spindle fibers disappear
- Known as Reverse Prophase
- Nuclear membrane and Nuclelolus reform
- Cleavage formation
What is Meiosis?
- Type of cell division necessary for sexual reproduction
- Number of chromosomes in the cell undergoing meiosis is reduced to half the original number
- Produces Gametes
- Has two stages: Meiosis 1 and Meiosis 2
What happens during Interphase I?
-Same process in Mitosis
What happens during Prophase I?
-Crossing over occurs
What happens during Metaphase I?
-Tetrads align on the equatorial plate
What happens during Anaphase I?
-Chromosomes are seperating
What happens during Telophase I?
-Formation of cleavage furrow
What happens during Meiosis 2?
- Same process as Mitosis
- 4 daughter cells are formed
