Mitosis and Cancer Flashcards
At the cell level, what is cancer?
Uncontrolled cell growth that have DNA replication errors
What are proto-oncogenes?
Genes that code for positive cell cycle regulators.
How do oncogenes cause a cell to become cancerous?
Can cause cell checkpoint to be activated before the necessary conditions to move forward with division are met
When does a Proto-oncogene become an oncogene?
When the Proto-oncogene has been altered such that there is an increase in the cell cycle
What do negative regulator proteins do?
Prevent cell cycle from continuing if certain factors are not met
What are the most well known tumor suppressor genes called?
Retinoblastoma protein, p53, and p21
What is apoptosis and why might it be triggered?
Programmed cell death. Triggered in cells if abnormalities or DNA damage cannot be repaired.
