Mitosis And Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Mitosis
Division of cell nucleus. First stage in cell division
Cell division
Process by which a cell divides into 2 new daughter cells
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm. Second stage of cell division
Interphase
In-between cell division, a period of growth
Cell cycle
Series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide(IMPAT)
Prophase
First and longest phase of mitosis. Chromosomes become visible and double, centrioles move and make the spindle, nuclear envelope disappears
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
M=middle
Anaphase
Sister chromatids move away from each other
A=away
Telophase
Chromosomes lose shape, cell membrane pinches in, nuclear envelope re-forms
Chromosomes
Visible genetic material. Paired chromatids.
Sister chromatids
2 identical connected strands of a chromosome
Chromatin
Thin, unorganized genetic material
Cancer
Uncontrolled cell growth. Does not respond to normal growth regulation signals
Asexual reproduction
Process by which a single parent reproduces by itself
DNA replication
Process by which DNA copies itself
