Evolution Flashcards
Mutations
Permanent changes in an organisms DNA
Adaption
A trait an organism has that helps it to survive in an environment
Ex: katydid looks like a leaf
Extinct
The end of a species
Ex: dinosaurs
Variation
Differences in an inherited trait of an organisms
Populations
A group of organisms of the same species that live together in a certain area, they mate with each other
Species
A group of similar organisms that can reproduce together
Evolution
Change over time
Fossil
Remains of life from an earlier time
Ex.) limestone sandstone shale
Homologous structures
Body parts that are similar in organ and structure doesn’t need to be used for same purpose
Ex.) human hand, cat paw
Vestigial structures
Body part no longer in use but present in a reduced form
Ex.) human appendix and tail bone
Population
A group of organisms of the same species that live together in a certain area they mate with each other
Have unique attritutes like; growth rate, age, structure
Variation
Differences in an inherited trait of individuals in a population
Allows new species to evolve from and existing species
