mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
process of cell division
What is the purpose of mitosis?
for the growth and repair of cells
What type of cell(s) does mitosis start and then end with?
Starts with a “parent” cell then makes 2 “daughter” cells.
What are the 5 stages of mitosis
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
- cytokinesis
What happens at interphase?
The chromosomes replicate to make 2 identical copies
What happens at prophase?
- mitosis begins
- spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes
What happens at metaphase?
spindle fibers attach the chromosomes in a single line across the middle of the cell
What happens at anaphase?
spindle fibers pull the chromatids apart to opposite ends of the cell
What happens at telophase?
complete sets of chromosomes form at the ends of the cell
What happens at cytokinesis?
- Final stage in cell division
- The cell splits in half, with 1 set of chromosomes going into each new cell (the daughter cells)
What are checkpoints in Mitosis?
Points in mitosis where special proteins send information to prevent cells from dividing if it were to fail
What are 3 reasons a cell won’t divide in mitosis?
- not enough nutrients
- DNA has not been replicated (so no copies for the new cells)
- DNA is damaged
How does uncontrolled cell division happen?
a mutation occurs in the gene producing instructions for a “checkpoint” protein
