cell organelles Flashcards
What is the cell membrane?
The thin protective covering around a cell
What is the cytoplasm?
A jelly-like substance within the cell, containing the organelles
What are the 4 things the nucleus has/does?
- controls all the activities in the cell
- contains DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
- pores control substances that come in and out
- the ribosomes are made in it’s nucleolus
What is the mitochondria?
- energy producers of the cell (powerhouse)
- carries out cellular respiration (photosynthesis)
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
- network of membrane-covered cells
- the cells highway for protein transportation
What do ribosomes do?
They manufacture and assemble proteins
Where are ribosomes made/where are they located?
They are formed in the nucleolus and are located attached to the ER (some free floating)
What does the Golgi body do?
It sorts and repackages proteins for delivery. They also produce vesicles (vesicles “bleb” off the Golgi body)
What are Vacuoles?
Temporary storage compartments for the cell
What are lysosomes?
Compartments in cells that break down food particles, wastes, and worn-out organelles
What organelles do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
- cell wall (protects cell and gives it shape)
- chloroplast (changes suns energy into chemical energy)
