Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis happens in what cells?
Somatic (body) cells, these are practically every cell that is a non gamete.
Why is mitosis required?
For the growth of multicellular organisms and repair of damaged tissues.
How many times does the nucleus divide?
The nucleus divides once to produce two identical nuclei..
How many stages of mitosis are there?
4: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.
PMAT are the 4 main stages of mitosis, what has been referred to as a 5th?
Interphase.
What happens during interphase?
Normal cell functions, the cell prepares to divide as the DNA unravels and replicates, the organelles also replicate and ATP production increases.
What happens in telophase?
o
What happens in anaphase?
o
What happens in prophase?
Chromosomes condense, getting shorter and fatter, the centrioles move away, forming a network of fibres called the spindle, the nuclear envelope breaks down and chromosomes are free in the cytoplasm.
What happens in metaphase?
o
What is cancer the result of?
The result of uncontrolled cell division.
