Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is mitosis
A
When a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form two identical offspring
2
Q
How do you multi cellular organisms use mitosis?
A
To grow and develop or replace damaged cells
3
Q
What happens during the cell cycle
A
Growth and replication

Q
The steps of the cell cycle
A
- In a cell that’s not dividing, the DNA is all spread out in long strings
- Before it divides, the cell has to double the amount of sub cellular structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes
- It then duplicates its DNA-so there’s only one copy of each chromosome for each new cell. The DNA is copied and forms X-shaped chromosomes. Each ‘arm‘ on the chromosome is an exact duplicate of the other.
Then mitosis happens…

Q
The steps of mitosis
A
- The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart. The arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell.
- Membranes form around each of the set of chromosomes. These become the nuclei of the two new cells-the nucleus has divided.
- Lastly, the cytoplasm and the cell membrane divide

Q
What does the cell produce after mitosis
A
Two daughter cells
