Microscopy Flashcards
Light microscopes
Uses light and lenses. Can see individual cells and large sub cellular structures (e.g. nuclei)
Electron microscopes
Uses electrons. Higher magnification and a higher resolution. Can see much smaller things (e.g. mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes and plasmids).
Resolution
The ability to distinguish between two points. The higher the resolution, the clearer the image.
Magnification
How much bigger something is.
Stain
Used to highlight objects in a cell by adding colour
Equation for magnification
Image size divided by real size
Equation for image
Magnification times real size
Equation for real size
Image size divided by magnification
