mitosis Flashcards
what is mitosis?
division of the nucleus
what controls cell division?
the nucleus
what did mitosis result in?
the formation of two identical daughter nuclei
what is cell division a means of?
increasing the number of cells in an organism
what is the chromosome complement?
the number of chromosomes present in each cell
who has a chromosome complement?
every species
what does mitosis do?
- maintains the chromosome complement
- provides new cells for growth and repair of damaged cells
what are the stages of mitosis?
stage 1: the chromosomes shorten, thicken and become visible, while doubling to form two identical chromatids
stage 2: the nuclear membrane breaks down
stage 3: nuclear membrane has disappeared, spindle fibres have formed, chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
stage 4: spindle fibres pull the chromosomes apart into chromatids, one chromatid from each pair moves south and the other goes north
stage 5: the cytoplasm starts to divide and a nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatids, which have now become chromosomes again
stage 6: the cytoplasm has divided completely and two identical daughter cells have been formed
why is it important for mitosis to maintain the chromosome complement?
each cell needs to have the same number of chromosomes to function properly
