Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division that multiplies cells.
What is mitosis for?
Growth and repair.
What is a diploid cell?
A cell that has a full set of chromosomes, (46).
Why are the cells created in mitosis diploid cells?
Because they have two full sets of chromosomes, (a pair of 23 chromosomes = 46).
What is the first stage of mitosis? And what happens?
Interphase. The chromosomes are copied.
What is the second stage of mitosis? And what happens?
Prophase. Spindle fibres form in the cell and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear.
What is the third stage of mitosis? And what happens?
Metaphase. The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
What is the forth staged mitosis? And what happens?
Anaphase. The chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindles.
What is the fifth stage of mitosis? And what happens?
Telophase. The cell is between cell divisions.
What is the sixth stage of mitosis? And what happens?
Cytokinesis. A cell membrane divides the cells. The nuclei start to reform.
What are the stages of mitosis in order?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis.
