Mitosis Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
Mitosis is when a cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
When dose Mitosis happen?
Mitosis occurs after interphase, after the cell has grown, preformed its functions and replicated its DNA, or when it needs to heal injured cells.
What are the four stages of Mitosis
1) Prophase 2) Metaphase 3) Anaphase 4) Telophase
What happens in prophase?
- The nuclear membrane disappears
- Centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell
- Spindle apparatus begins to from
- Chromatin forms visible chromosomes each with two –chromatids
- Nucleolus disappears`
What happens in metaphase?
- Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell so that a sister chromatid from each chromosome faces a centriole
- Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of the chromosomes
What happens in anaphase?
-Spindle fibers pull chromatids to opposite ends of the cell
What happens in telophase?
- The final phase in Mitosis
- One complete set of chromosomes is now at each pole of the cell
- Spindle fibers disappear
- Chromosomes unravel and become chromatin
- The nuclear membrane and the nucleolus reappear
- The cell divides by cytokinesis where the middle of the cell is pinched in until two identical daughter cells are formed
How do animal cells do cytokinesis?
The cell membrane pinches in near the middle of the cell dividing the cytoplasm into two new cells.
How do plants cells do cytokinesis?
In plant cells the cell plate develops across the middle of the cell forming a new cell wall between the two new cells.
what is the result at the end of mitosis?
Two daughter cells that are identical to the parent and each other.
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is a form of cell division that produces two new daughter cells genetically identical to the parent cell. Specifically mitosis is the process by which the chromosomes replicate and cytokinesis is the “final stage” in which the cell divides.
Why do cells divide?
- It allows single celled organisms to reproduce
- It allows multicellular organisms to grow whole the cells size remains the same.
- It allows organisms with many cells to be specialized for different tasks
