Mitosis Flashcards
What are chromosomes?
Cell parts that determine what traits a living being will have.
What is a chromatid?
One strand of DNA; after replication, a chromosome is made up of two identical chromatids.
What are daughter cells?
New cells produces by cell division.
What is cytokinesis?
Division of the cytoplasm of one parent cell into two daughter cells.
Define Interphase.
The phase of mitosis in which the cell performs its normal activities for life. DNA is in the chromatin state.
What occurs during Prophase?
Centriole pairs move apart; nuclear envelope starts to break up.
What happens during the transition into Metaphase?
The spindle apparatus forms.
Define Metaphase.
The process in which the chromosomes line up at the spindle equator. Spindle fibers form from the centrioles. (METAphase = MIDDLE)
What happens during Anaphase?
The sister chromatids (DNA) move apart. (ANAphase = AWAY)
Define Telophase.
The process in which cytoplasmic division occurs. This is the last stage of Mitosis. Two diploid daughter cells have been formed.
What is the mnemonic pattern for remembering the stages of Mitosis?
I.P.M.A.T
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
What does Mitosis produce?
Two identical offspring.
What is cell division?
A process by which cells reproduce.
